While homeowners have basements, spare rooms, and backyard storage sheds, condo dwellers don’t have that luxury. In most cases, condos come in small spaces. With this spatial restriction, people with a lot of things have to toss a few things, give away furniture and other stuff to declutter before moving into a Condo. In this article, we discuss five storage ideas that will make a small condo space feel bigger.
- Organize your Kitchen
Freeing up kitchen space gives an appearance of a having more space. Store appliances and utensils while not in use. Free up the counter. While this sounds so pleasing to the ear, it can be a difficult feat when you have many appliances and only a few cupboards. The trick, therefore, is opting for mini appliances when purchasing stuff for your new condo. Buy a mini food processor for example. Mini appliances are smaller in size and require lesser storage space
- Avoid gadgets
While gadgets make our lives easier, they are not always necessary. When last did you use the spaghetti maker your auntie got you during your wedding anniversary? What of the meat mincer? Is it still in the box? If you find it is still in the box nine years later, consider donating it to charity. You can also sell it online. However, if you can’t part with it and you feel you are on your way to becoming the next Mario Batali, move your spaghetti maker into a storage closet and retrieve it when you are ready.
A good way to determine what’s useful and what’s not is to categorize of all your kitchen items into ‘often’ ‘sometimes’ ‘rarely’ and ‘never’ columns and clean up your cupboards accordingly
- Consolidate
Consolidation is yet another great way to create more space in your condo kitchen. You don’t need a blender when you have a food processor. If you only make a toast during public holidays, perhaps a toaster isn’t what you need in your kitchen. Didn’t you say you want to restrict yourself to vegan food? What is that meat mincer still dong in your kitchen? This applies to all other appliances in your condo. For example, if you find you mostly grab a Starbucks on your way home instead of brewing your own coffee at home, that Keurig is just taking up unnecessary space
- Selecting furnishings
Don’t just buy, plan. You should always keep your storage needs in mind when shopping for condo furnishing. That mahogany table could be exactly what you want for your foyer but what will you place on it? While most condos have limited storage spots, it is important that you buy items that will best cater to your needs. Do you receive visitors often and don’t have a second bedroom? That wider couch is perhaps what you need.
- Closet organization
When it comes to closets, keep it organized as humanly possible. Do you spend hours trying to find that favorite bracelet your friend gave you? Do you have trouble finding your necklace? Consider using hanging jewelry organizers to keep your jewelry organized. Since you will not store them in the drawer, finding them will be easy. Get shoe organizers with hooks that fit onto the backs of closet doors. The trick is to organize your closet such that you know exactly where to find what you need.
Having your condo organized is more or less the same as organizing your home. While your home will have plenty of storage space, Condos will generally have less storage space. It is, therefore, necessary to always use your condo sense when moving in. Organize and furnish your condo to make most of your smaller space.
